the second sunderland film festival - january 2005

DIGITAL SIDEBAR

A week of special screenings and events to be held at Kino Vivaldi, Vivaldi restaurant, Tavistock Place, Sunderland, offering the chance to sample the very latest in cuttingedge
digital film-making from the UK and Slovenia.

SUNDAY 23RD JANUARY, 7PM
(tickets£2 including £1 club-membership)
A Home for the Bullets (S N Sibley)
105mins approx
World premiere of this hard-hitting - and hilarious - action thriller from Grangetown’s very own homegrown film director, Steven Sibley plus Eclectic sounds from local musicians Richard Dawson and Martine.

MONDAY 24TH JANUARY, 7PM
(tickets£3 including £1 club-membership)
Bullets Miss the Fool (Mitja Novljan, Slovenia) 83mins
Interesting premise and high entertainment value (Slovenia Bulletin). It’s very offbeat, very quirky, low-key - probably the fi rst Slovenian cult movie - and sort of an ‘up-yours’ production to boot (Ales Blatnik, Filmofil).

Yasmin (Kenny Glenaan, UK) 87mins
Worried about the future of British filmmaking? ‘Yasmin’ could be the antidote. (Alan Docherty, Culture Wars)

TUESDAY 25TH JANUARY, 7PM
(tickets £1.50 including £1 club-membership)
Iranian Night
Focus on Iranian cinema and culture. Featuring Iranian music by local musicians, a talk on Iranian cinema, a chance to sample the national cuisine and (tbc) the showing of an Iranian film via digital projection.

WEDNESDAY 26TH JANUARY, 7PM
(tickets £3 including £1 clubmembership)
Here and There (Mitja Okorn, Slovenia) 90mins
The film was shut out of the FSF (Festival of Slovene Film) because it was“insufficiently professional”, but by many critics’ accounts, it was just as good if not better than many of the films that were shown during that festival. LIFFe (Ljubljana International Film Festival)
clearly thought the same, as evidenced by it’s being shown during that festival just days later. (Slovenia Bulletin)

The Plague (Greg Hall, UK) 104mins
Hip-hop fl avored youth movie ... brims with vitality ... Impressive thesping, streetwise wit and visual inventiveness recall the early, no-budget work of Brit director Shane Meadows. (Leslie Felperin, Variety)

THURSDAY 27TH JANUARY, 7PM
(tickets £1.50 including £1 clubmembership)
Sunderland Short Film Competition
- screening of selected entries and awarding of the prizes

Slepilo (Jan Bilodjeric, Slovenia)
104mins
Slovenian films are not very well known and not many show up at international festivals. But that’s changing. A new name in the Slovenian film business is Jan Bilodjeric, whose film Slepilo received an honourable mention in New York's International Independent Film and Video Festival. (Insight Central Europe)

Tickets for Kino Vivaldi events are NOT purchasable in advance - it’s strictly pay-on-the-door only. As all of these films are showing without certificates, Kino Vivaldi must operate
as a members-only club - membership is available on the door each night. Over 18s only.

Warning: several of the films contain strong adult content, if in doubt please ask!
